Hey Daniel!! What's up man!?
You could just call me and ask.....

Anyway...
It is actually sausages frying , whit a gate on them.
Thanks for letting my big vocal secret out into the public!!
Basically, o n the blakroc stuff, the vocal sound on that track specifically... It was an inner tube 87 that I wasn't sure I would like, but it was cool. Inner tube audio makes a conversion kit for the Neumann U87 that makes it into a tube microphone. Kind of cool.
They had one at the studio I did the Nicole wray vocals at, and a couple of days of the black roc sessions with RZA and dan and pat.
That drive is the mic pre getting fucking fried. Plain and simple. Hitting the shit out of the mic pre. I don't even remember what the pre was.... Probably some Neve thing.
But that doesn't matter. That sound is the sound of commitment. The way it breaks up when they are actually singing the part instead of a distortion applied later like an effect. You get a different vibe from that sort of thing, and then you have to deal with it when you are icing and you make way different decisions.... Like how it sits and how to make it sound more clear. It's about building in a flaw (that I love) and then making it as great as it can be but wi tons of character. Any mic or mic per sounds pretty much the same until you burn it up a little, and then the ones I like get interesting...
Same with mics and compressors, for sure.
To get that sound you need a mic, a mic pre, a singer, some kind if compressor or way to turn it down so it isn't destroying the input on your DAW, and balls.
